Puppy Star Obedience is the most important thing you can do for your puppy! It is partly based on Ian Dunbar’s Sirius Training Methods and Terry Ryan’s methods. The most common reasons that dogs are surrendered can be prevented during puppyhood. As a responsible puppy owner, you must prepare your dog for life by teaching them how to interact with our world properly. Your puppy will engage in an essential opportunity to interact with other puppies and people, learn to communicate and get along with other dogs, while also learning to focus on you with others around. You will learn to curb problem behaviors before they grow difficult as you will both prepare to enter Basic Obedience. Your puppy will begin to learn the the basics of obedience training, including recall, bite inhibition, building a chew toy habit, accepting touch in preparation for vet and groomer visits, targeting, desensitizing to and confidence building around things they’ve never seen before, but will likely encountered (such as hats, umbrellas, etc.). This course also offers advice and problem solving for elimination training, nipping/mouthing, possession/food aggression and other common problems. Due to the socialization aspect of this class, we allow up to eight dogs, but will have an assistant trainer in classes with more than five. This STAR Test (Puppy/Pre-CGC) will be given during this class.
Prerequisite: Puppies must be under 6 months of age or younger at the 1st class.
Get started with socialization right away by taking our Puppy Play Time sessions (supervised by a certified instructor) while you wait for your session to start. Don’t waste those precious learning weeks.
All puppies under 8 months of age welcome!
Puppy Play Time is a 30 minute socialization time with a certified instructor. There will be no formal instruction of obedience cues. Discussion on proper play behavior, appropriate greetings, understanding of dog’s body language, etc. will be had while puppies play. Feel free to ask the trainer questions as well. This is the best way to make valuable use of your puppies important learning stages. You can attended before, during and after puppy classes. Vaccines must be up to date (please bring proof to each session). This class is with pre-approval by the instructor. Instructor or registrar permission required.
All puppies under 8 months of age welcome!
This class provides extra focus on impulse control for dogs that need it! The material focuses on impulse control w/ toys, treats, & dogs, while still covering basic behaviors like sit, release, drop it, get it, playing tug, polite greetings for people and people with dogs. We’ll also make at least one trip outside (location varies by class ability) to polish impulse control with more distraction. We’ll also cover crate training skills (a place mat can be used instead of a crate, but agility prospects will need to crate happily) to help with management at home and in sports classes.
The class also includes a brief introduction to agility, tricks training, rally obedience, and agility!
Basic Obedience 2 teaches you and your dog the basic cues of obedience training; focus, sit, sit-stay, down, down-stay, recall, targeting, collar grab, leave-it and heeling. This course also offers problem solving for jumping, barking, digging, chewing, leash pulling, nipping/mouthing, and a basic understanding of canine body language as we explore how we communicate (or intercommunicate) with our dogs!
Our class size is small (maximum 5 dog/handler teams) therefore you get more attention from the trainer(s) and we often have assistants in class, unlike many pet store classes where you will see 8, 10 or more dogs in one class. It is important to us that you and your dog get the support needed to succeed so that you are happy with your dog, because we are…Dedicated to Canine Companionship!
Prerequisite: Basic Obedience 1: Manners
Basic Obedience 3 is for anyone who is interested in achieving the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Title or are considering therapy training for their dog. It is also great for anyone who just wants to spend more time with their dog, training and bonding properly as well. Cues are worked while increasing distance & distractions. An introduction to competition and rally obedience, clicker training and other canine sports will be included.
Prerequisite: Basic Obedience 1 & 2 or equivalent and instructor approval
Good Manners in Public is an extension of obedience where we will visit local areas where dogs are welcome and strengthen your control of your dog in different situations (also called “proofing” behavior). Socializing and working with your dog in various areas is suggested in all classes and guidelines are given at each level, but this class gives you an opportunity to have a trainer with you during the experiences. Visits include local pet stores/groomers, dog parks, walking around town, etc. Car safety and behavior will be addressed as well.
Prerequisite: Basic Obedience 1 & 2
You and you pup will explore new communication skills & strengthen your bond while learning fun tricks to show off! Teaching your dog how to use her body is incredibly rewarding. This is great for therapy teams, animal modeling/acting, agility training & more! You and your pup will learn to use a clicker/marker word and chose from almost endless skills such as front paw targeting, wave “hi/bye”, object training (box work, plus), circle left, circle right, play dead back up, rear paw targeting, army crawl+/or play bow. Additional props will be available and taught, such as skate boards, shopping carts, soccer balls and more fun items!
